Last week, IBCM hosted Dr. Diana Escobar, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, for a compelling lecture on “Economics of Circularity in Agriculture.” The lecture provided valuable insights into current approaches to sustainability within the agricultural sector.
Organized by Prof. Dr. Ekrem Gjokaj, the session explored how circular agriculture closes production cycles, reduces waste, and supports both environmental sustainability and farm profitability. The discussion highlighted the importance of integrating sustainable practices into modern agricultural systems.
Dr. Escobar shared insights from her research using FADN data, highlighting:
• Nutrient management for Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Carbon flows
• The success of mixed crop-livestock farms in achieving circularity
• Opportunities for strategic cooperation between farms to reuse by-products efficiently
This lecture offered IBCM students and staff a practical and research-based perspective on sustainable agriculture and the circular economy in Europe, encouraging further discussion on future applications in the field.
