For all IBCM students, the education becomes much more than simply textbooks or test scores. It’s an experience that is measured in internships and other experiential learning opportunities.

Our students have experienced tremendous results from their internships, by providing real-world experience that only hands-on internships provide.

Another story is going to be told by our Environmental and Agricultural Management student, Marko Jovanovic, who is currently finishing his internship at Kurt Weiss Greenhouses Inc, in New York, USA.

Below he is sharing his impressions, thoughts and experience with all of you in a short prepared interview.

How did you get this internship?

Marko: I was planning to finish my internship somewhere abroad for better experience and to learn how to become a manager in practice, I heard from students about the program and then asked professors, who gave me instructions on how to apply for the internship in United States. Without professors and IBCM stuff I couldn’t come here, a great opportunity for which I am very thankful.

What were your first impressions of the USA?

Marko: I cannot really describe my first impression, I was confused because everything was different and unusual. From the yellow cabs and tall building I felt like I was in a movie. So, the first impression was that I was really confused but also felt amazing at the same time, so I was very happy for that.

What has been the most enjoyable aspect of your internship at the USA?

Marko: During these months in the USA I had many moments I enjoyed, but the best one was the trip in the Washington DC. The city is amazing because of the beautiful historical places, actually everything important in the US is exactly in Washington DC. And of course, meeting new people, learning more about different cultures through the traditional foods, drinks and music, and last but not least, I am really enjoying learning everything about growing flowers, spraying and using different types of chemicals that the plants require.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced and how did you overcome it?

Marko: The biggest challenge in this internship is working with different types of people who don’t speak English, since in this company the majority speaks Spanish. But anyways, this internship is giving me the chance to learn another foreign language such as Spanish Language, and I am improving it daily.

How have your studies at IBCM helped you during your internship?

Marko: Everything I learned at IBCM is connected to my internship, so basically I already know the theory and I am here to apply that theory in practice. This way I hope I will complete my knowledge through the experience work in the green house.

What advice would you give to other students doing internships?

Marko: My advice to all students is to find internships abroad, that way they will have a chance to learn another language, catch a better experience and learn how to work with different people, which is one of the most important thing for proper management in the future.

What are your plans after graduating from IBCM?

Marko: After graduation I am planning to open my private business connected with Agriculture and Environmental Management. Every future IBCM student is more than welcome to join me in the realization of my future project.

The IBCM team would like to thank Marko for sharing his experience with us and wish him the best of luck in his future plans!
