The Public International Business College Mitrovica (IBCM) continues to strengthen Kosovo’s international presence as Prof. Dr. Ekrem Gjokaj, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, Projects, Innovation, and Scientific Research represented the institution at the European Rural Development Network (ERDN) Conference in Vilnius, Lithuania, from September 10-14, 2024. The conference, themed “Green Transformation in European Rural Areas,” brought together academics, researchers, and policymakers from across Europe to discuss the future of rural sustainability.
Prof. Dr. Gjokaj delivered a presentation titled “Green Transformation in Kosovo’s Rural Areas: Opportunities, Challenges, and Implications,” highlighting Kosovo’s ongoing efforts toward sustainable development. His presentation focused on key areas such as green energy, organic agriculture, and rural tourism, while also addressing the challenges posed by limited infrastructure and market access in rural Kosovo.
“Kosovo’s rural areas are rich in potential, but to unlock that potential, we must invest in green initiatives that not only benefit our economy but also preserve our environment. We are committed to sustainable transformation that supports local communities and encourages rural development,” said Prof. Dr. Gjokaj.
The presentation was well-received, with international stakeholders showing interest in future collaborations with IBCM. Several institutions expressed interest in joint academic research projects, EU-funded programs like Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe, and exchange programs focused on rural tourism and organic farming.
“The conversations we had during this conference have laid the groundwork for future collaborations with institutions across Europe. IBCM is committed to fostering these relationships to bring valuable insights and resources back to Kosovo,” he added.
In addition to networking, the vice-rector participated in workshops and panels on topics like sustainable agriculture, rural tourism, and climate resilience policy. These discussions provided valuable insights for IBCM’s approach to rural development, particularly in areas like community engagement, green infrastructure, and policy development.
IBCM’s participation in the conference has also led to its invitation to join the European Rural Development Network, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to international collaboration.
“Being part of the European Rural Development Network will allow IBCM to work more closely with leading institutions in rural sustainability across Europe. This is a major step forward in our efforts to promote green transformation in Kosovo’s rural areas,” Prof. Dr. Gjokaj emphasized.
